The first religious services in Sugar Grove were held in 1855, and the Church of Christ was organized in June of 1857.  After meeting in the log schoolhouse, in the early 1860's the church moved to a frame building on a nearby farm.  The worship services were held here until a piece of land was purchased and the building was erected where the present church building stands.  The church building was surrounded on all sides by groves of Sugar Maple trees.  Basket dinners were often held in the grove, and sometimes afternoon and evening services were held to fill out the day!

The building received an addition to the auditorium in 1900, and after the closing of the Sugar Grove school, it was purchased for one dollar and added to the north side of the building.  This improvement included a basement, 3 classrooms, an entry way, and an office.  Another project involved closing in the SW entry.  Other projects have included new doors, carpeting, and most recently in 2004 new pews.  The ramp in the front has made this building very accessible.

The history of the Sugar Grove Church of Christ is rich with many Christian workers who have given of their time, efforts, prayers and substance to see that this church continued and that those who moved on from here were ready for their future.  Visitors openly comment on the inviting, country atmosphere that is found in this place.
